The Indian women’s cricket team coach Amol Muzumdar, had opened up about his stint with the national team.
Muzumdar, who took over as the women’s team coach in October, maintained a simple approach before the crucial match. “There were no big messages. We always told each other we need to finish well. We usually start well, but finishing has been our area to improve. Today was that day,” he said.
The coach’s clear vision helped the team overcome group stage defeats against Australia, England, and South Africa. His strategy was evident in the simple message he wrote on the whiteboard before the semifinal: “We just need one more run than them to reach the final.”
Muzumdar’s bold decisions included backing young players like Kranti Goud and Shree Charani, which proved successful. “Kranti has been sensational since her debut. She’s young, but she’s done wonders with every opportunity. She’s learning every day. Renuka Thakur complements her beautifully,” he noted.
The decision to promote Rodrigues to No.3 in the batting order was particularly effective. “I always felt Jemi has the temperament to shift gears. That one move made a difference,” Muzumdar explained.
The 50-year-old coach also acknowledged the contributions of senior players. “Harman was calm, smiling all the way through. Deepti kept motivating everyone, and Smriti was her usual cheerful self. Everyone knows their role, and that helps,” he said.
The team’s transformation after their group stage loss to England was significant. “The next practice session had more energy and intent. Sometimes it’s not failure. It’s just a hiccup that teaches you more… I am still in daze,” Muzumdar reflected after the victory against Australia.
The win marked a special achievement for Muzumdar, who despite his illustrious domestic career, never played for the national team. His calm demeanor and strategic approach have brought stability and direction to the Indian women’s cricket team.
