NEW DELHI: Senuran Muthusamy showed patience to bring up his first Test century while Marco Jansen scored freely at the other end, as South Africa scored a strong first-innings total of 489 on day two of the second Test in Guwahati.India’s stand-in captain Rishabh Pant was seen guiding his bowlers throughout the day. At times he gave direct instructions, at times he encouraged his teammates, and at times he told them to stay calm, saying he would handle the field. One such moment involved Washington Sundar, when Pant told him to let the batter go for a big shot, and the batter responded by hitting a six.In the 124th over of the South African innings, Senuran Muthusamy, who did not play the first Test, was facing Washington Sundar. One run had already come from Marco Jansen in that over. Before the last ball, Pant said, “marne de usko.” (let him hit.)Sundar tossed the ball outside off, and Muthusamy hit it over long-on for six.Muthusamy was later dismissed by Mohammed Siraj in the 139th over. He scored 109 off 206 balls with 10 fours and 2 sixes. He became the third South African batter to score a Test century at number seven or below against India in India.Muthusamy played cautiously in the morning session with occasional boundaries, and then played more freely after tea, taking a cue from Jansen.Their 97-run stand between Muthusamy and Jansen, with Muthusamy reaching his first Test hundred and Jansen scoring his fourth Test fifty, strengthened South Africa’s push for a first Test series win in India in 25 years. South Africa scored 489 in their first innings.
