FIDE bans Grandmaster for cheating; allows jeans in dress code
FIDE updates dress code, allows jeans for Grand Swiss events

Nagpur: The World Chess Federation (FIDE) made a couple of announcements, punishing a Grandmaster for cheating and respecting players’ demands on the dress code. Ukraine’s Kirill Shevchenko, who became a Grandmaster in 2017, had his GM title revoked by FIDE on Saturday. At the Spanish Team Championship held last October, Shevchenko was caught cheating when two of his cell phones were found in the restrooms after a couple of his opponents complained to the arbiter. When the arbiters investigated the matter, they found Shevchenko guilty and suspended him from the tournament. In March this year, when Shevchenko was banned for three years, he appealed to the FIDE Ethics & Disciplinary Commission. On Saturday, the commission revoked Shevchenko’s Grandmaster title and imposed a three-year ban. Meanwhile, FIDE also updated their dress code rules, respecting players’ demands by allowing jeans to be worn in Grand Swiss events.
