West Bengal rains: Several dead as landslides hit Darjeeling district; iron bridge collapses

NEW DELHI: West Bengal’s Darjeeling region faced multiple landslides on Saturday after continuous heavy rainfall, disrupting traffic and resilting in several casualties.Raju Bista, BJP MP for Darjeeling, expressed concern over the damage caused by the rainfall and said that there have been multiple deaths.In a post on X, Bista said, “I am extremely anguished to learn about the massive damages caused due to extremely heavy rainfall in many parts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. There have been deaths, and loss of properties, and damages to the infrastructure. I am taking stock of the situation, and in touch with the relevant authorities. We have already instructed our BJP karyakartas to mobilize in helping and assisting people. We will do everything in our power to help and assist our people. I also appeal to all our Alliance Partners, and other political and social organisations in the region to coordinate efforts, so that we can reach timely help and support to those in need.”NH10 was blocked at several points due to landslides, while NH717A, the alternative route to Sikkim, was also affected near the Reshi border, halting movement. Water levels rose at low-lying stretches of NH10, including Ravijhora and 29th Mile, but officials said there was no significant loss of crops or property. Kalimpong Superintendent of Police Shrihari Pandey said, “The situation is under control. Teams are working to clear debris and restore road connectivity as soon as possible.The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited is working with the district administration and police to reopen the affected highways. Authorities confirmed there is no need for evacuation at this stage, and Civil Defence Volunteers and disaster management teams remain on high alert in vulnerable areas. Detailed situation reports have been requested from all administrative blocks.Rainfall has also affected Birbhum district, where the India Meteorological Department predicted heavy to very heavy rain, ranging from 7 to 20 cm in isolated areas. The IMD issued a warning for Odisha and West Bengal due to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. Heavy rain is expected across several districts of Bengal until October 6.Officials have urged residents to remain vigilant in flood- and landslide-prone areas.
