Indian teenage cricket sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has set a new record for most career sixes in Youth ODI cricket, surpassing Unmukt Chand’s previous mark of 38 maximums. The accolade came during the second India U-19 vs Australia U-19 50-over match at the Ian Healy Oval in Brisbane on Wednesday. The 14-year-old left-handed batter achieved this milestone in just 10 innings, compared to Chand’s 21 matches, while scoring 70 runs off 68 balls against Australia before being dismissed by Australian captain Yash Deshmukh.
Sooryavanshi has now accumulated 540 runs in Youth ODIs, with 26% of his runs coming from boundaries. His current tally stands at 41 sixes, establishing him as the new record holder in this category.The young prodigy’s achievement adds to his growing list of records in youth cricket. He recently became the youngest player to participate in the Indian Premier League, where he scored the second-fastest century in the league’s history and became its youngest centurion.His entry into first-class cricket was equally notable. During the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season, he made his debut at 12 years and 284 days against Mumbai, securing his place as the youngest player in the tournament’s history.The young cricketer from Samastipur has also claimed the record for the fastest Youth ODI hundred, completing his century in 52 balls. This performance surpassed the previous world record held by Pakistan’s Kamran Ghulam, who had scored a 53-ball century in 2019.In the same innings, Sooryavanshi set an Indian record by hitting 10 sixes in a single match. At 13 years and 188 days, he became the youngest centurion in competitive cricket’s 170-year history.His remarkable performances extended to Test cricket at the youth level, where he scored a 58-ball hundred against Australia in the 1st Youth Test in Chennai. This innings stands as the second-fastest century at this level, just behind England’s Moeen Ali’s 56-ball hundred.
