Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin remained unsold at the ILT20 2025 auction on Wednesday. The 39-year-old spin veteran, who was placed in the highest base price category of USD 120,000, failed to attract any bidders.Former India players Dinesh Karthik and Piyush Chawla secured contracts with Sharjah Warriorz and Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, respectively. Ashwin’s absence from the auction pool was attributed to his high base price and scheduling conflicts with the Big Bash League in Australia.

ILT20 CEO David White Exclusive Interview: ‘R Ashwin set for ILT20 stint’

Reports suggested that Ashwin may have withdrawn his availability just before the auction. Former New Zealand fast bowler and commentator Simon Doull shared his thoughts on this development.“We’re hearing that he may have pulled out of the auction, which is a massive surprise. I mean, you’ve got to read the room,” Doull said on commentary.“You’ve got to understand what’s going on out there and all that money left, when there are 3-4 teams with over $400,000 left in their pot. I don’t think they came here not wanting to spend money — it’s there to be spent. If he pulled himself out, then he just hasn’t read the room. I think sides would have gone in for him.”Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League in August. This decision made him available for various global T20 leagues, including the ILT20 where three teams are owned by IPL franchises.According to multiple reports, Ashwin is interested in participating in next season’s Hundred tournament. He is also set to become the first prominent Indian male cricketer to play in the Big Bash League later this year.“Thunder were crystal clear about how they’d use me and brave enough to back it,” Ashwin said in a statement. “My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we’re fully aligned on my role. I love how Dave Warner plays the game, and it’s always better when your leader shares your mindset. I can’t wait to perform for the Thunder Nation.”Ashwin’s upcoming schedule includes representing Team India in the Hong Kong Sixes tournament in November. He has signed with Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League season.
