Selena Gomez has a close-knit relationship with her parents, especially her mother, Mandy Teefey.
Mandy gave birth to Selena on July 22, 1992, when she was just 16 years old. At the time, she was living in a rough neighborhood in Grand Prairie, Texas, and dating Selena’s father, Ricardo “Rick” Gomez.
“I was a teen mom with Selena, obviously, and was very judged by that,” Mandy shared with Entertainment Tonight in 2017. “Even my counselors and teachers said I had failed.” That early criticism only motivated her more.
“When I got pregnant, I thought, ‘OK, I have another person depending on me. I’ve got to get straight.’ I wasn’t going to let her have the upbringing I did,” she said.
Mandy married Brian Teefey in 2006, when Selena was 14. Together, they managed Selena’s career for eight years, guiding her through her rise to fame with Disney Channel.
Their partnership was key to Selena’s early success, but by 2014, she decided it was time for change. Mandy later told TMZ she was surprised by the decision but respected it.
