JAMMU: Crime branch of Jammu & Kashmir Police arrested a native of Hisar, Haryana, for the alleged murder of a Mumbai woman in Aug, sources here said Friday. Officers, however, remained tight-lipped about the arrest of Sher Singh and said details would be shared within days.An unidentified gunman fired several rounds inside a physiotherapy centre on Aug 21, resulting in injuries to Mehjabeen Akil Sheikh and her sister Fatima, both from Malad (West) in Mumbai, and one Jaspreet Kaur of Ludhiana. They were admitted in JK Medicity Hospital by two individuals, who claimed they were injured in a road accident. Jaspreet, however, went missing from there and the sisters were transferred to a private medical college and later to Govt Medical College, Jammu, where Mehjabeen died on Aug 29.Subsequent investigation confirmed the women had suffered gunshot wounds. Police registered a murder case after Mehjabeen’s death. On Sept 19, crime branch headquarters constituted a six-member SIT to investigate the killing.Police sources said SIT detained Fatima following her discharge for questioning on the firing at the Sainik Colony physiotherapy centre where suspicious activities had allegedly been going on for some time. These activities were allegedly overlooked by three cops, including an SHO, who have since been suspended.SIT will probe into the circumstances leading to the murder, and role of the three cops to pass it off as an accident.
