Indian boxers Jaismine Lamboria and Nupur Sheoran secured medals at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool on Wednesday, while two-time champion Nikhat Zareen lost her quarter-final bout to Turkey’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu in the 51kg category with a 0-5 scoreline.Nikhat Zareen, who was returning from injury, faced a tough challenge against two-time Olympic silver medallist Cakiroglu. Despite landing some hooks, Zareen struggled to control the bout as her Turkish opponent dominated with clean punches. The opening round saw Zareen attempting to claim the center of the ring, but Cakiroglu effectively countered with back pedaling and precise strikes. Although Zareen briefly gained momentum with a series of hooks, Cakiroglu, despite having a point deducted, regained control to secure her fourth World Championships medal.Jaismine Lamboria advanced to the 57kg semifinals by defeating Uzbekistan’s Khumorabonu Mamajonova. The World Boxing Cup gold medallist utilized her reach advantage effectively, controlling the bout from distance with sharp jabs while maintaining strong defense.Nupur Sheoran, the 26-year-old granddaughter of legendary boxer Hawa Singh, secured a 4-1 victory over Uzbekistan’s Oltinoy Sotimboeva in the +80kg category. The bout, contested in a non-Olympic weight division featuring only 10 boxers, saw Sheoran enter directly in the quarterfinals due to her gold medal at the World Cup in Kazakhstan.Sheoran started strongly with early combinations, though frequent clinching disrupted the flow. She managed to take the opening round on four of five judges’ cards through cleaner punching. The 20-year-old Sotimboeva showed resilience in the second round, keeping the exchanges messy and winning over two judges despite Sheoran’s late flurry of punches. The final round saw both boxers receiving point deductions – Sotimboeva for excessive holding and Sheoran for using her head.Sheoran’s ability to land cleaner punches proved decisive in securing her semifinal spot, where she will face Turkey’s Seyma Duztas. In the men’s division, Jadumani Singh in 48kg and Abhinash Jamwal in 65kg progressed to the quarterfinals with convincing victories on Tuesday night. However, Jugnoo Ahlawat’s campaign in the 85kg category ended in the first round against Scotland’s Robert McNulty.
